What is Environmental Hypoxia?
Environmental hypoxia means that a low concentration of dissolved oxygen (DO) exists in the water. In order to prevent the formation of environmental hypoxia, especially for a pond that has a greater number of fish stocked, an increase in oxygen is required.
Oxygen is the most important water quality factor for healthly fish. We can provide oxygen through different forms or techniques, via water features or water falls, venturi or air pumps.
Both venturi and air pump are the common way that the koi keeper used to provide extra amount of air in the pond. The drawback of the venturi system is tend to only aerate the upper surface of the whole water volume and a lot of back pressure on the water pump, this will shortened the pump usage period.
However, when the air pump is used, more factors are of benefit to the pond, such as:
- Promoting better fish health.
- Improves Bio-Filtration.
- Controls the algae growth.
- Promoting water clarity and quality.
- Agitating the accumulating sludge at stagnant area.
- Improves water circulation.
- Act a secondary air supply, if the water pump fails to work.
How do we go about introducing additional air into the pond, by using the air pump?
- By connecting the Air Pump to the Air Stones and placing at different parts of the pond. Or
- By connecting to the Air-Membrane Diffuser Disc.
To maximise the air introduced into the water, one must increase water surface turbulence which will increase the contact with oxygen available and therefore increase the oxygen transfer.
