They need to be mass-filled in the chamber and arranged overlapping in rows hanging from the top of the chamber.

Lava Rock

This medium is baked at a very high temperature, resulting in a very hard, porous compound that has an irregular shape, with a great surface area for aerobic bacteria to colonize on. It is ideal to use as a biological medium.

Filter Mat and Foam

Open-cell foam usually available in 3-different grades of foam placed on top of the Larva rock, or bio-balls in the filter. It is widely used as a mechanical medium a it clogs easily, and requires frequent cleaning to avoid the clogging.
